Experience
I've studied roughly 25 history courses in my time at Glasgow, from the Medieval period onward. My personal favourite period is probably the 1700s to the early 1800s, though this has no real bearing on my tutoring. I'd look to help the student in their approach to learning rather than just helping them pass their exams or essays, so that they can apply this in other subjects and in later courses.
